Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine
Dr Kathy Joy King
R.TCM.P., R.A. O.B.A.A.

When I look back I can see the road was mapped out for me since I was a child to enter this profession.  I’ve been practicing Chinese Medicine since 1997 when I graduated as Dr. of Traditional Chinese Medicine from the International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Vancouver BC.  I then went on to The University of Shandong in Jinan China to further my studies. Chinese Medicine includes the disciplines of acupuncture, herbs, diet, massage, cupping and more.

I’ve taken many courses to fuel my passion including Acupuncture Injection Therapy which injects homeopathic remedies into the acupuncture points.  This modality really increases the rate of healing. I studied bio-kinesiology at Bio-Kim Nutritional Institute in Vancouver in the early 90’s. Every year I am updating my education and loving it. I am a member of the Obstetrical Acupuncture Association and Society for Acupuncture Injection Therapy.

The Chinese have a saying “there is no knot that can’t be untied” and that is the motto I run my clinic by.  I help my patients discover how to help themselves and encourage them to educate themselves as to how to ‘untie the knot’.   I use many modalities to achieve this. Starting with getting to know my patient and their health history is key to them beginning to heal.  Sometimes it is a simple acupuncture treatment or sometimes Chinese herbs. There are over 3,500 herbs in the Chinese herbal compendium and a combination of these can be required.  The bio-kinesiology background allows me to test muscles for further remedies such as western herbs or diet program.

I specialize in women’s diseases and obstetrics.  This helps with hormone regulation as well prenatal care.  Through acupuncture I love to help turn breach babies and have assisted in hospital with pain and encouraging labour.  This is the part of my practice that I love which is to help a little one to come into the world a little easier.

I love the mystery of the body when someone comes in with a health concern that no one seems to be able to help.  Because Chinese Medicine has been around since before microscopes and x-rays we are often pro-active with the healing of these complex and difficult diseases.  I was an editor of a book called “Treating Complex Diseases with Chinese Medicine” by Dr. Yu Chang Zheng. I learned the depth that Chinese Medicine can go helping with this book.

I also like to concentrate my practice on the emotional work involved in healing.  Acupuncture is an effective tool in overcoming some long standing issues such as cravings. Bio-kinesiology helps pinpoint some of the emotions.   I believe that looking at some of the emotions behind a long-standing pain can help alleviate it and take it out of the body for good. Working with counsellors and aiding the body at the same time, that, is where the true healing is.  That said, sometimes you just have to fix a pain and that’s good too.
